About Us
Carbon Stewardship Solutions, LLC is a social entrepreneurship founded by Dan (physician anesthesiologist) and Karlie (emergency medicine physician assistant) - a husband and wife team. Through their careers in healthcare, they began to recognize the unintended environmental consequences of the patient care they performed.
In addition to serving their hometown community in a rural hospital setting, Dan and Karlie also homestead and practice regenerative agriculture on their family farm. Because their passions for medicine and agriculture intersect in this unique way, they began to recognize opportunities to effectively and voluntarily neutralize much of the emissions footprint generated by healthcare delivery.
Dan and Karlie’s core values are centered on Faith and Family.
Their faith has engrained in them a strong belief that we are all called to be wise stewards of the land and natural resources. On their own farm, they have implemented a multitude of regenerative practices such as cover crops, healthier fertilizer plans, drainage management to protect their local watershed, minimizing tillage, precision agriculture, recycling, and powering their farm with solar energy.
Raising their young family with these same core values is very important to them—almost every night that they are not working late at the hospital, they trade in their scrubs for boots and blue jeans, and take their children along with them to form their own bonds with the great outdoors.

Dan’s Journey: Becoming a Pioneer in Carbon Neutral Anesthesia
Since 2020, Dan has provided Carbon Neutral Anesthesia to his patients, first by decarbonizing his anesthesia practice and then by initiating carbon sequestering practices on the family farm to fully offset his remaining anesthetic carbon footprint. This successful experience led Dan to assist other colleagues to also become Carbon Neutral Anesthesiologists, in addition to leading other sustainability efforts in the surgery department of his own hospital. He and Karlie now wish to share their expertise on a larger scale with other anesthesia professionals and healthcare facilities who would like to be carbon neutral as well.
The core philosophy of Carbon Stewardship Solutions is that anesthesia professionals have been gifted a historic opportunity to voluntarily take steps to usher healthcare into an era of greater responsibility, while not compromising patient care or adding excessive costs or provider burdens. This is OUR moment to show leadership, just as the generation who came before us radically changed perioperative safety standards, and made anesthesiologists the recognized trailblazers for patient safety in hospitals worldwide.
Given that there is a strong likelihood that emissions regulations are soon coming that will impact the specialty of anesthesia, we believe that by taking voluntary preemptive steps, anesthesia professionals can steer the conversations about emissions reductions so that all measures are common-sense, meaningful, and do not impact patients or providers adversely.
As many hospitals, insurance companies, and government agencies have begun intensely focusing on carbon reduction efforts, exercising leadership on this front will help anesthesia professionals become recognized as subject matter experts on healthcare sustainability.
